Our Name
From the early 1970s until very recently we called ourselves ‘Pender Island United Community Church’, though in fact we were never a regular congregation of the United Church of Canada. The United Church of Canada graciously allowed us the use of their historic building until 2020, hence the previous use of 'United' in our name. In 2019 we became incorporated as 'Pender Island Community Church' under the BC Societies Act. In 2020 we purchased the building from the United Church, and are no longer associated with them.
Because we live on a small island, there is a limited choice of venues for religious gatherings, so members of our congregation come from a variety of Christian denominations: Mennonite, Lutheran, United Church, Baptist, Anglican, Pentecostal, etc.
Our leadership
We do not have a permanent pastor or minister. The spiritual and material operations of the church are the responsibility of the Church Board. The Sunday message is given by guest speakers. We have a rota of about ten speakers, some of whom travel to us from the Mainland or Vancouver Island for the service, while others are drawn from our congregation.
And, of course, we are all dependent on the grace of God in Christ Jesus!
